Our Main Focuses

Prevention: Keeping Teeth Healthy

We detect and treat problems like tooth decay at an early stage. Though the development of tooth decay and gum disease is partially due to our genetic design, good home hygiene helps to keep our mouths disease-free. We promise to help teach and encourage good home care habits and diagnose areas that may need special attention.

Our preventive measures ensure the continued good health of your gums and teeth. If tooth decay ("cavities") develops, we will diagnose and formulate a treatment plan to keep your teeth healthy and strong. We will also take special care of existing dental work, implants, or prostheses you may have.

Preventative Care: At Least Every 6 Months

It is so important to do your part at home. We advise brushing twice daily for 2 minutes and flossing at least once daily. So many dental problems can be prevented with good oral hygiene practices. Keep in mind that even patients with good home care can develop dental decay or gum disease.

We recommend that all patients be seen at least every 6 months for a cleaning and routine exam. If we diagnose any stage of gum disease or periodontal disease, we may recommend more aggressive treatment and recall cleaning schedules.

Our tip: Come in for a consultation and schedule your next appointment after each visit.

Kids Love to Smile!

Children love to be just like mom and dad. Help create good oral health care habits for the little ones in your life! Baby teeth should be cleaned twice a day, like adult teeth. When toddlers can brush on their own, monitor their habits. Remember, children under 6 should be supervised at all times as swallowing toothpaste can be harmful.

Scanlon Family Dental recommends a first dental visit for cleaning around the age of three. Parents and grandparents: we encourage you to bring infants and toddlers to your own dental visits as a way to introduce them to the office and atmosphere. Establishing regular visits at a young age will improve the health and stability of adult teeth.

Treating Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can lead to tooth loss untreated. It can also cause loss of supporting bone in the upper and lower arches. This disease can result from one or both of the following: genetic factors and poor home care habits. The status of the disease may require an evaluation and/or treatment from a specialist. This may require having more extensive cleanings more often. Learn more about periodontitis and the steps you can take to prevent it.

Our periodontal treatments include:

  • Standard cleanings for patients without periodontitis
  • Scaling and root planing, or "deep cleanings" for patients who have periodontitis and a loss of supporting bone
  • For patients that we feel may benefit from more extensive periodontal procedures such as gum surgery, we will refer to a specialist
